Both programs you can customize almost every feature with a custom keyboard shortcut. That's why I really prefer Corel brushes applying and mixing colors feels a bit more natural. Clip and Photoshop are basically stamps that are in a line. I forgot to mention both programs can import photoshop brushes(abr.) which opens it up to more brushes than you would want.Ĭorel brushes do not work the same as Clip and Photoshop brushes. It's closer to real paints. Clip does however have a lot of free ones available. Clip has a decent amount of brushes, enough to use it without adding more. There arent a lot of free brushes and you have to purchase packs to add more. I have had some issues with custom created palettes in Painter crashing the software but I found a workaround.Ĭorel Painter has more "installed brushes" but since it has so many categories of dry and wet media many might not be useful. The functions just work.īoth have very customizable interfaces. I also like the interface better, for when I'm using it on the go on my tablet. While I like the brushes more in Painter, Clip is way more stable. I tried it awhile back when they were Manga Studio. Matter of fact they used to have a forum on the Corel site, but it was full of so many issues that people were having that they just shut the forum down. You also need to have a beefier computer to run it well.įor about 6 months now I have been using Clip. These and many more are problems that have plagued Painter since I first started using it in the 90's so it's pretty clear they don't know how to fix it. I have had the lasso tool stop working until you restart the program. It also crashes or freezes more often than other programs. Sometimes palettes will be off screen which is a pain. It also very buggy, for example right now I can not cut/copy or paste. However, Painter is also one of the most unstable art programs that I have ever used( tried most of the ones available). It has some really interesting brushes called particle brushes which make every stroke unique. It also has all of the tools I use in one package so I don't have to switch between programs. I have also tried almost all of the painting software out there at one point or another.Ĭorel painter has one of the best brush engines around(only 2nd to Rebelle). I have a more painterly style, just for reference. I switch to Photoshop for about 5 years then switched back to Painter and now Clip Studio. But if you'd like to consider the idea of being a photographic artist, don't be afraid to roll your sleeves up.I'm just the person you are looking for. Hopefully you'll find the software that will do the job for you if a computer painting is all you want. The completed painting may take up to a month, but no simulated computer painting could hope to compare. That outline is sent to Painter, where I determine the color palette and painting style I want to use. After a source photo is manipulated into a montage that would hopefully make an appealing work of art, and printed out for reference (I use 18x12) Photoshop can save up to a week's time and labor by creating a perfect no.2 outline in about three minutes. Programs such as Painter and Photoshop allow us to do a little cheating along that line, however. Study his paintings closely and you'll see that philosophy presented in abundance. Sargent understood that in art the human mind strives for the simplicity of a limited color range, and for a balance of harmony and tension in color interaction. Study closely his application of colors, along with his unique style, which no software could ever hope to imitate. To understand fully what I mean I would ask you to peruse the work of John Singer Sargent. The former can be accomplished in five minutes, the latter maybe in five years. Photographic Art, using a photograph as a reference file only, and creating an outline and defined color palette, combined with a particular painting style, is an entirely different thing. Photographic Painting is the process of transforming the pixels in a digital photographic file so that the final result appears to be a painting. To understand what I'm saying, let's impart a few definitions. Simulated paintings from a computer, however, are pretty much out of fashion, as they can do nothing to replicate true art. The program can auto-paint, but I think other simulated painting programs could do a better job. You've done the right thing in exactly describing what you want to do, and for that reason I don't think Painter would give you the best of what you'd want. I use Painter 2021, and have had all editions since the program was first invented, where it evolved from a crude, bug-bloated program to the sophisticated software app that is used by professional artists today.
